What is a stroke?
A stroke occurs when there is interruption or limited blood flow in the brain. This leads to deprivation of nutrients and oxygen which leads to the death of brain cells within minutes. Traumatic brain injury on the other had is the disruption of the normal brain function due to a blow or a bump to the head. Anyone and everyone is susceptible to strokes. Any age group and any gender – we’re all at risk. What helps determine our susceptibility are our diets, our genetic code and our family history.
There are 2 types of Strokes:
- Ischemic stroke (part of the brain loses blood flow)
- Hemorrhagic stroke (bleeding occurs within the brain)
Strokes may affect motor function or the ability for the body to move. Part of the body may be affected, like the face, a hand, or an arm. An entire side of the body may be affected (for example, the left part of the face, left arm, and left leg). Weakness on one side of the body is called hemiparesis (hemi = half + paresis = weak) and paralysis is hemiplegia (hemi = half + plegia = paralysis).
Similarly, sensory function — the ability to feel — can affect the face, hand, arm, trunk, or a combination of these.
Other symptoms like speech, vision, balance, and coordination help locate the part of the brain that has stopped working and helps the health care professional make the clinical diagnosis of stroke.
CBD and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
There have been studies recently that examined the relationship between CBD use and TBIs; the results are very promising. Approximately 1 million people suffer from TBIs every year in the USA via sports-related concussions, traffic accidents, stroke, and other traumatic injuries.
CBD’s well documented anti-inflammatory effects have shown a positive future for stroke patients. Lowering the inflammation and pressure in the veins and arteries will always benefit a TBI patient.
CBD works on and activates the CB1 and CB2 receptors throughout our body (including the brain). The neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory effects of CBD enables our body to prevent auto-immune attacks on the brain tissue and prevents the death of brain cells.
Having well documented antioxidant properties, CBD helps to remove toxins and dead blood cells from the blood vessels. CBD can also remove bad cholesterol and promote good cholesterol acquisition. All these benefits help heal the brain and help promote brain health (not to mention overall body health too).
Currently there are tons of CBD products on the market that will aid in the stroke recovery. All methods of administration will be personally determined. Inhale? Eat? Lotion? Supplement? They will all be beneficial for the stroke patients recovery and all of us healthy people to prevent an onset of a stroke. Having a balanced diet coupled with the addition of CBD to your regimen can curtail your risk for a TBI (wear a helmet when biking helps too hehe)
